Five Attributes of Trans Allies

Last week in my Transgender Studies class, and also at a Diversity Day presentation that I made on the Auraria Campus, we talked about allies.

In my opinion, allies are an important component of any group. They add numbers, they add voices, and in some cases, they bring a certain amount of power that is lacking because of the way that a particular group is seen in the "mainstream," where the group is trying to gain at least equality, if not acceptance.

Loved the whole piece, especially "Being an ally is something that you live, not something that you turn on and off depending on the situation."

Shit that is awesome: “The short instructional manifesto for relationship anarchy”

“Love is abundant, and every relationship is unique

Relationship anarchy questions the idea that love is a limited resource that can only be real if restricted to a couple. You have capacity to love more than one person, and one relationship and the love felt for that person does not diminish love felt for another. Don’t rank and compare people and relationships – cherish the individual and your connection to them. One person in your life does not need to be named primary for the relationship to be real. Each relationship is independent, and a relationship between autonomous individuals.” See the rest of Andie’s AMAZING manifesto at Andie’s Log – The short instructional manifesto for relationship anarchy.

A woman once told me pointedly something that has stayed with me to this day.  We were kissing.  Lying on the cold wood floor, my hand traveled across her stomach and she whispered, "I think we should take it slow."  I agreed immediately.  Before moving in to kiss her again, I said, "Just tell me when to stop."

This, I thought, was considerate.

I love reading about people's experiences when they're introduced to the "yes means yes" part of consent culture, when they experience how fun and sexy enthusiastic, verbal consent can be!

the problem with polynormativity

Reblogged from Sex Geek:

Polyamory is getting a lot of airtime in the media these days. It’s quite remarkable, really, and it represents a major shift over the last five to ten years.

The problem—and it’s hardly surprising—is that the form of poly that’s getting by far the most airtime is the one that’s as similar to traditional monogamy as possible, because that’s the least threatening to the dominant social order.

Anti-Abortion = Anti-Sex

Reblogged from atheist, polyamorous skeptics:

Ross Douthat, one of the more thoughtful conservatives out there (weak praise, I know posted today about the relationship between abortion and single parenthood. In an effort to rebut the conclusion that abortion restrictions lead to more single parents, he wrote:

in a post-Roe world, social conservatives often find themselves accepting single parenthood as the lesser (by far) of two potential evils.

Douthat doesn't seem to understand/acknowledge that abortion existed and was wide-spread before Roe v. Wade, it was just terribly unsafe and/or expensive. Also, anyone who uses the phrase "pro-lifers are justified in believing" (as Douthat did) immediately loses all credibility in my book.

Wes Breedwell was fired on Monday from his job at Rocketown, a Christian youth outreach center and music venue in Nashville, Tennessee, for wearing a band t-shirt from Hostage Calm supporting same-sex marriage.

It should be noted, that Rocketown is also a non-profit.

Breedwell wrote on Instagram: "Got fired from Rocketown today. Social media is what did it. So here is a picture to show my support for equality and free speech including social media.

The Only Thing Worse Than a Disney Princess is a Disney Prince

Reblogged from allisms:

But seriously, y'all.

The traditional Disney Prince has about as much sparkle and panache as something completely lacking in sparkle and panache. He has  a creative name like "The Prince" "Prince Charming" "Prince Phillip" "Prince Eric" or "Prince Adam" (that's the actual name of the Beast, apparently), and no personality. Ok, well, the Beast has a personality, but the only thing anyone else does is be obsessively fixated on some girl he met once in the woods.

was born with reduced vision in one eye and has never experienced the three dimensional sight which most of us take for granted. Recently he was inspired by the concept of a hearing aid to build a device which can augment his vision. Behold, the very Borg-like eye-patch that he wears to add distance and heat to his palette of senses…
